horn mixes - how to make each voice more distinct?

I'm in a blues/soul band and I'm trying to build mixes
which give me a more authentic "Stax horn section"
sound. Basically, I'm using a trumpet, sax, and 'bone
(in various combinations of octaves), and I've been
reasonably happy with the results so far. But I feel
that with the outstanding horn samples on the QS7/8
(I have a QS7), that I should be able to get a more
realistic result when using them in a mix than I have
been.

What I really need to do (I think), is to build the
mix using individually voiced horns (brass and winds),
and to find some way to slightly detune them,
especially when stacking octaves (a baritone and tenor
sax, for example).

Of course, I might also need to consider the effects
setups, but I don't even know where to start with that.

Has anyone had any success emulating the soul/R&B horn
section sound in live mixes?

Rick
