I haven't really checked out the new Roland's. Most of my gear is fairly old (rather than my cs6x) and I'm pretty happy with it. The XP30 can be expanded BTW too, I think you can put 2 of the plug in cards in it. It really depends on the style of music and what you're looking for.

A lot of people are going the soft synth route. I'm heading that way as soon as Cakewalk Sonar comes out. Since it looks like you're doing studio work, check that out. NI even has a free soft synth in their site that you can download. I haven't tried it yet.
