: So far I've only usd my QS7 to play live using it's internal sounds, or connecting my QS7 to my computer to act as the input device for my music software programs. I just bought the Roland sound canvas SC-8820 and want to use my QS7 as the master to play the SC-8820 sounds in a live application. How do I get the QS7 to call up and play the SC-8820 sounds? Once I accomplish this, can I layer, determine splits points, assign different parts of the keyboard to play different sounds, etc., like I always have when using the internal sounds of the QS7 in live applications?

Marie, Yes you can. The QS7 is a great controller except for one major thing Alesis omitted from the software and that's the inability to send bank change messages other than the ones an Alesis synth would recognize. Roland synths use controller #0 with a value in the 80's as MSB and controller#32 as LSB with a valie of 1-4 to change all the banks. Suffice to say that you won't be able to change banks on the Sound Canvas-only program changes (0-127/1-128)within the currently assigned bank. Hook up a midi cable from QS7 midi out to SC-midi in. You should be in multi-timbral mode on the SC and in mix mode on the QS for best results and the most flexibility. Refer to the QS manual to set up a customized mix using the channels, keyboeard zines and programs you desire. Save mix to a user location and it'll be ready for instant recall.
