Alesis has been known to recomend the Roland EV-5 volume/expression pedal. It costs about fifty dollars on the net, (zZounds, Kraft, etc.)
I use an older Yamaha EP-1 which I got cheap at the music store, and it works pretty well, though it is a little sensitive, it is smooth through its range, unlike the one you describe. I tried a different Yamaha pedal prior to the one I have now, but it did not work at all. Something to do with the plug being wired the opposite direction or some such thing.
