You can connect your 6.2 to your PC with regular midi cables if you have a joystick port (usually on your sound card) and a joystick-to-midi adapter cable ($20 at your music store). If you don't have a joystick port then yes you need a USB-to-midi adapter or midi interface. If you're gonna go USB I would go with an interface. It's more expensive but it'll give you the option of adding more midi devices.
I don't suspect USB would be any faster since the signal still has to be converted to midi to get to your synth.
