win xp to serial driver to qsr HELP!!

just picked up a nice QSR. found a serial cable and downloaded the Roland driver listed at the Alesis.com site.
installed driver, hooked up Qsr...no joy!
any help from you pros would be appreciated beyound measure.

using SoundTower editor...gives "qs midi external error"

ps. IBM 360x laptop 500 mhz.
