Let's calculate this:

You want to sample at 44100 samples/sec. Each sample needs 2 bytes (16 bit), so we need 88200 bytes/sec for a mono sample.
For a length of 40 seconds, the memory needed is 3.528.000 bytes. Since the 4Meg Flash card can hold more than 4 million bytes, it should suffice.
(All you computer experts out there, correct me if I'm wrong...)
I use a four meg card myself and I guess it holds about one minute of sample data.

Maybe you can reduce the sample rate to 22050 per second, effectively doubling sample memory. Some say that 44k is only necessary for sounds with lots of high frequency components (cymbals, for example). You can read about this at some sample page (sorry, I forgot where exactly)
