You misunderstand my colleague. If your QS-6 is in GM mode, it will not accept bank changes from the synth. So the first step is to turn off GM mode, regardless of what bank you are actually playing out of.

Second, Cakewalk lets you determine how banks are changed. You need to set this to 'Controller 0'. The other two, "normal" and "Controller 32", don't work.

That works for me. And I play sequences with patches from different banks all the time, using the Multitimbral Mix (User 00). I've modified my 00 mix to exclude certain channels for another sound generator and a drum machine, but the principle is the same.
