Hi Greg,

no, your PC won't record anything coming through the serial port but MIDI data (VERY unlikely)
However, to record through the LINE IN connector, try this:
- Get a CD player or any other sound source and a connector cable chinch to 3.5 mm Jack ('back of CD-Player to Soundcard input')
- Plug it in and start it so that you have a continuous signal
Now open SoundRecorder (somewhere in your START-menu under accessories and Multimedia)
Press the Record button on SoundRecorder (the one with the red dot)
If the 'oscilloscope' (gren line) flickers, then hardware is OK.
If not, double-click the tiny speaker icon that's on your task bar. Find the volume slider for 'line in' and 'overall volume', but both for RECORD (depends on your soundcard).
Set those sliders to 100% and try again.

Good luck!
