If you have a PS/2 mouse, you can disable COM1 in your Device Manager settings. Then select COM2 in the Roland setup page. Your modem will still use COM1, even though there will be a red X in your Device Manager page for COM1. (This is all true with Win98 and Win95.)
The COM3 and COM4 settings in my Roland driver are greyed out, as well, so I was unable to use them. Good luck.

: :Kevin,
: Thanks very much for the information. I've downloaded the Roland driver,
: and I'm now figuring out which com port to assign it to. It only
: works on 1 or 2, and both these ports in my PC
: Are already assigned to something else, and I get the conflict message. (Although
: in the install, the driver lists com 1-4 as choices.)
: I need to rearrange my modem, which is on com 2, and
: hopefully this will work.

: Go here:
: : ftp://ftp.rolandus.com/pub/roland/libdata/WDRIVERS/SERIAL95.EXE
: : I've had good luck with this driver and my QS8.

: : : Could someone let me know what the exact terminology for
: : : the Rolad serial driver is, and where I can find it? I've
: : : tried everything to get the Alesis serial driver to work
: : : on my Dell laptop (which is tied into a computer network,
: : : and it will not recognize the "external synth". Some have had luck
: : : with the Roland, so I want to give it a shot. Thanks!( If this
: : : doesn't work, I guess creating mixes on the QS8 itself is
: : : in my future.)
