The serial cable route is cheaper by far.You probably need to buy an interface to use the midi connection.These are anywhere from fifty to a couple hundred bucks depending on how many channels you are gonna use.Midi does allow for multiple synths and more overall channels of data however.It may be good for a future upgrade if you add more synths or a drum machine etc.
