QS8/VS-880/Cakewalk gridlock...

Hi,

I could use a hand if anybody knows the answer to this one... I have a QS8 that is connected (via serial cable) to an older 486 running Cakewalk Pro Audio 6.0. [pause to let you finish making fun of my computer] It has worked fine as a sequencing setup. I recently bought a Roland VS-880EX, and am trying to get Cakewalk and the VS to sync (using any method). As I understand it, I can't use the VS as the master, because I don't have a true "MIDI In" to the computer, just my serial connection to the QS8. I should be able to use the "MIDI Thru" from the QS8 to let Cakewalk control the VS's clock, and indeed when I do this the "MIDI" light on my VS indicates that it's receiving MIDI data. But nothing happens -- The VS just sits there and waits for a sync.

I suspect there's something wrong with the way I've set up the VS, but I also imagine this is a pretty rare problem so I'd check this site, rather than Roland's. The VS-880EX Manual, which has apparently been translated by Japanese grade-schoolers, is no help at all. Anybody hit this problem before?
