MIDI Cable Issues

Im looking for input here.
Im using a soundblaster live soundcard for the use of soundfonts. The 'breakout box' I was using had Female ports to plug midi cables into. This all worked fine till 2 weeks ago, when the box had a run-in with my dog (so it no longer works). Now, I have gotten a new setup, but this version is not a box, but cables with male ends (that normally plug directly into a synth).
My problem is that the synth is 10 some odd feet away from the computer, and the cable is 6 feet long- moving the synth is not an option (size of the room).
Would I experience any latency if I:
1) got a long extension for the gameport, so the cables would plug directly in, or
2) used a dual Female coupler to join the IN/OUT cables that used to plug into the old 'breakout box' with the new cables (both ends are Male).
I apperantly need to do one or the other, but before I do, I'm looking for feedback.
Thanks for all the help!
Mike
