No Midi input devices in Cakewalk??? :(

I am new to computer music and Midi and would appreciate help with the following.
Computer settings are as follows,
Sound playback=Via Audio Wave- only.
Sound recording=Via Audio Wave- only.
Midi music playback=Microsoft GS Wavetable synth-only.
Cakewalk midi devices-output box is showing=Midi Mapper-only.
The problem I am having is that there is nothing displayed in the Input box!!!
I don't know whether I have a s**t soundcard, but I am on a budget any any help would be gratefully recieved!
