Do I need a Keyboard for synth software?

I have installed Edirol Superquartet and Hypercanvas but cannot access the synth software GUI at all! Do I need to plug in a midi keyboard controller? or can I use the software with my own PC keyboard?

Thanks for any help for a keen newbie!
