Any free midi builder?

To start out, thanks for this site. It is helpful and has a lot.
I have just discovered how good midi can be. I now want to try my hand at it. Are there any free midi makers that you can download on the internet. It doesn't need to be fancy, just maybe have a simple to learn interface.
