I got word from Yamaha support that the MIDI in port on this device is always active. They also said that this port listens on all 16 channels. In addition, they confirmed that, after power up, I should be able to connect a controller to this port and get the default sound (Accoustic Grand Piano?) without first having to send a bank select and program change.
The conclusion, at this point, is that the MIDI in port on my PSR is not working.
