Dilemma

I am trying to use the midi files held on my computer (running XP) to assist in keeping my singing in key.
I hoped to be able to send the midi (information) side of the files to a TC Helicon Voice Harmonizer with pitch control. Further I was hoping to send the audio to the mixer to use as backing tracks.
Our local Music shop advised I needed an Alesis IO2 as this would split the files and supply a better external Sound card than the computer has.
I wired as following:
Out of Computer by USB to Alesis Unit.
Midi out of IO2 to Midi in on TC Helicon unit.
Main out of IO2 to Mixer.
Now for the technical issues.....
If using any of five Midi Programs, when attributing midi to the IO2, all sound is lost.
If using earphone jack, then no midi signal to IO2.
I must be completely stupid and would appreciate any assistance or suggestions on how I can do this.
Thanks
