Since most MIDI files are written for General MIDI, you need a good GM sound module or at least a decent soft synth.
Edirol (Roland) used to produce the SoundCanvas line of modules, try to get one used on ebay.
They still make the VSC-MP1 software synth, it's not as good as a real synth but it costs only $40 or so.
If you want the "works" get a Roland JV-1080 or JV-2080, or any of the latest XV- modules.
I use a Roland SC-880 and a JV-2080 for General MIDI.
