In general a lot of the user patches are done to demonstrate the capabilities of the instruments, and in a lot of ways overdone.
I think your best bet is getting a patch that you like and turn down the effects, turning off the lFO etc.The sounds are done to sound good by themselves (a lot of times anyways), but end up muddying up a mix.
It's common practice of many people recording to actually go thru the patches and get rid of the chorus/reverb, and then add that later once you have a feeling of how the synth sounds in mix.
If you're still looking for other sounds, I would try out the sanctuary card. The ones in the vintage synths (which I own) do have a lot of reverb on them.
