You'll need to install the instrument definition file (INS) for the 7.1 or 8.1 (they have the same programs. It's available at this site in the Software section.
If you are using a MIDI cable on the gameport, you don't need the serial driver. You just chose your soundcard for the In and Out MIDI Ports under the Options menu.
