I've never used a preamp, and I've recorded a lot of mic stuff through the mic port, are you sure yours is working correctly?

I've recorded quite a bit of vocals over from my audio-technica MB2000L dynamic microphone, and they sound great, no preamp, just dirrectly into the mic port on my SB Live value.

But I will agree, the A/D conversion is a bit noisy, not too bad, but noticable, especially when you start doing internal effects and things that might bring noise out, but it's worked fine for me.
