Don't sweat it.. get a midi interface. USB to serial is going to get fuzzy. The ONLY advantage to using the serial vs the midi port is faster load times (about 2x) which only becomes important when uploading banks in the a flash card (which most users don't do)
However : Some people have been claiming slight timing problems with USB interfaces. Check user groups and such for specific info for the interface you want.
You'll be able to do all the stuff you mentioned thru the midi port. importing programs, mixes, etc.
Remember, the usual way this kind of stuff is done in synths is thru the midi port.. alesis (and other manufacturers) have provided this capability for people to get up and running quickly, but the functionality is the same.
