I'm currently using a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (around $200) and it rocks. As Rod said, if you're using a SB or the soundcard that came with your Pc, than you'll never achieve a fine result. I record my qs7.1 midi sequences into logic (as .wav) and then tune it a bit with some plugins (comps and eqs). The result is very good, opposite to some experiences I had some time ago with SB or blunded cards that, in fact, screw my sounds completely.
