The answer to your question number 1 is a resounding. . . no.
The Sample card always goes in slot A, unless there are more than one.
When you read somewhere, probably the owner's manual, "that it is preferable for the 512 card to be in Slot A," that was correct if the card containing the programs or extra banks is used with the samples inside the synthesizer and not with the samples in the Q-card.
The 512kb card, (or card containing programs), goes in slot B when used in conjunction with a card containing samples( like a Q-card, which should be in slot A).
