I had the same problem. Are you using a Mac or a PC?
On my PC, the problem was solved when I checked to make sure my serial ports were working properly within Windows. As it turned out, they were disabled in the hardware and I needed to edit the BIOS... (not recommended unless you absolutely know what you're doing).
Check out your system by right-clicking My Computer, then choosing Properties... check out the Device Manager tab and see if you have any conflicts under "Ports".
