Same opinion- the stock QS8 patches are better (and they aint so great...far from it!)

Looking for that elusive balance of accoustic warmth and fullness but with enough cut to be heard through the band.

Have you tried downloading Sam's patches (Sams Alesis Page)? He's created some really nice stuff and personally I'm learning a lot by working with his programs .. and it free ! (Thanks Sam!)
There is also a piano patch on the 528 S-ram card that for my purposes sound a lot better than the stock issues. Good Luck :Paul
