RS232C cables have DTE and DCE connections. If you are going from a DCE to a DTE,
you use a straight through cable. If you are going from DTE to DTE or DCE to DCE
you use a "null modem" cable with 2 and 3 on one end connected to 3 and 2 on the other.
There are also some control signals you may need to worry about, in general. You can
get a break-out box which has leds on it which allows you to work out which is what.
This whole thing is a grey art. There was a book "RS232 made easy" which did a good
job of explaining it all.
