I have an Akai DPS16 digital workstation, an Alesis QS6 keyboard and a Boss DR-770 drum machine that I want to work together with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. I am doing something wrong, because the only thing that is recording midi is the Boss.

Questions:

1. Which device should be the master controller and which order should the other devices follow. I’d like, if possible, to be able to control mix settings in Cakewalk with the Akai. It would also be nice to be able to control tempo settings in the QS6 with the Boss for midi rhythm programming.

2. I have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 audio card, which has S/PDIF in out, which connect to the Akai, and one midi in out. Is it ok to hook all 3 midi devices to the single midi port. I also have a Roland UA-100 USB audio device that has 2 midi ins and outs, which could be used. Which devices in the above chain should be set to midi through?

3. Has anyone successfully connected and recorded multiple midi tracks with an Alesis QS6 or comparable synth in Cakewalk. I set up the instrument definitions and at one point was able to control the note selections of the QS6 from Cakewalk, and even record one midi track, but now nothing. I must have changed a QS internal setting. What setting should the keyboard mode be in? (Ch Solo, Normal or Out 1…) Should Global be on or off? I have read both.

4. Last question, what is the preferred midi/audio editor/sequencer and why?

Thank you for all and any suggestions.
