In your control panel doubleclick multimedia to open the properties dialog.
Select the midi tab. This should show all the midi devices on your system.
You want midi for external midi port.
Although this is not the way I would go. If you get a sequencer software like cakewalk or cubase, you can choose what device you want from within the program and not affect how Windows plays a midi file. I never have Windows play a midi file unless I'm on the web. I would play it in the sequencer program.
Be sure you put midi out to midi in etc.
