: I am trying to connect my new QS8 to my labtop (Win95) via serial cable.
: I installed the latest Driver from the Alesis site.
: The switch at the back of the Alesis is set to PC.
: Whenever I start up Cubase or Soundbridge the program complains that is could not
: detect the Synth.
: I am able to play Midi files via Cubase, no problem.
: But when I attempt to play the keyboard via Cubase (Midi Thru set at Cubase,
: Keyboardmode OUTx, Gen Midi ON, I/O PC 38.4) I can only hear random sounds.
: I do see the little red and green 'LED' in Cubase light up.
: Even when I do not hit any key, the keyboard generates sounds.
: I tried a whole lot of other combinations, but could not find any that
: works.
I received a suggestion via E-Mail from Jon - this worked for me -thanks:

Hi Barbara,
I've had the same problem with my laptop. It is not connecting to the
synth, your only hearing your computers sound card. The Alesis serial
driver is not at all forgiving, it will not share ports. I tried
everything, but the Alesis driver would not work on my Thinkpad with
Win95. It actually hated the pcmcia card modem.
Finally, Dan Halbert posted a forum message on 8/29/98 titled "Serial
Driver and Windows 98". He suggested downloading the Roland Multiserial
Driver. I did and it works great. Much better than the Alesis Driver
and easier to install. You can download it at
"www.edirol.com/multiclient.html". Its a Zipped file. Simply unzip
with Winzip and click on setup/install. It will do the rest itself.
