Midi has been around quite a while. At the time it was worth the saved space to use 7 bits.
You have to lay out the bytes in 7 bit binary 0010001 0000100 etc., then put them altogether and chop them up into 8 bit bytes, then convert to hex and put into your sequencer.
I've only did it once, when I wanted my songs to automatically change the mode from program to mix at the start of each song. Finally got it working, but it took some work. Seems like you need to use two's compliment.
