Serial Cable and MIDI interface

I currently have a MIDI card with one input and one output. Normally I use my QSR to play MIDI
sequences through the MIDI out, but use the MIDI in to record information from my input device
to cakewalk.

However, sometimes I need bi-directional communication with the QQS. Would a serialcable to
the QSR simply free up my existing MIDI I/O or is it more complicated than that?
