This is a follow-up to my original post.
I called Alesis and they said it must be the card. I called Pertec and they said balogna. I then started checking through other messages and other places on the net and found out that the version of SoundBridge that comes on the Alesis CD is an older version and only supports type 0 midi files - my files were all type 1. I downloaded the new version of SoundBridge from Alesis and presto - the card works perfectly.
