I started out with PowerTracksPro and moved to CakeWalk.
PowerTracks is a lot of program for $29.

I've not had much experience with cubase, just tried their demo once, seemed like it was pretty much the same, just different interface.

Thats what it comes down to, learning the interface. You'll probably want to get into recording audio with your midi tracks eventually. I use CakeWalkProAudio8 and am very happy with it. I have some other good programs for audio, but I'm most familiar with CakeWalk, and come back to it for composing and working with midi.

I've had people tell me that CakeWalk is more hobby software and Cubase is more professional, and that might have been true at one time, but I haven't found that to be the case now. The more professional equipment usually comes with it's own software.

I thought www.musiciansfriend.com had pretty good prices on CakeWalk products, but shop around.
